The Death Valley Century, March 2005

I did this ride with my cycling friend Valerie, who's from New Jersey. These pix were taken by her using a digital camera and by me using film and, for a couple of them, a cell phone camera. We were supposed to ride the nothern route up to Scotty's Castle and back but there was a VIP in the park (Laura Bush), so the 300 of us had to ride the southern route instead. The temperature was in the very tolerable mid-70s.

Valerie's account of the ride for her club newsletter.

Coming into Death Valley via Beatty after a 950 mile drive from Monument, CO.

The bike is in the car and all my gear is in the box on top. The Subaru is a terrific road car.

Dawn at Furnace Creek.

Sun on the west side of the valley as the ride begins.

Valerie and her awesome Trek 5000.

Taking a break at Badwater on the first leg; I was riding the Dahon Allegro.

This is what Death Valley looks like most of the time.

Flowers, desert, water, & mountains. The lowest part of the valley is a lake this time of year.

On Jubilee Pass (1290 feet).

Sea of flowers.

More wild flowers.

And yet more flowers.

Lunch at Badwater, 282 feet below sea level.
